Washington DC Office In Washington, internships run throughout the fall, spring or summer semesters for college students and particularly qualified high school seniors, with preference given to students from New Hampshire, especially those from the First Congressional District. Although all internships in all offices are unpaid, students gain invaluable work experience. The hours are flexible to accommodate students' hectic course schedules, but generally run 8:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. when Congress is in session, and 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. when not in session. Congressional internships offer students a chance to learn about how Congress works. Responsibilities vary from general administrative duties to working closely with staff on legislative issues. Interns answer the phones, assist with processing and responding to mail, and give tours of the Capitol. Interns also research legislation for the staff, attend hearings and briefings, and work on long-term projects. Our office is currently looking for interns for the fall semester. To apply, please fax your resume and cover letter to (202) 225-5822, attn: Intern Coordinator. District Offices in New Hampshire High school and college students can also intern in my Manchester and Dover offices. The hours are generally 9-5, for periods determined on an individual basis. Interns in the district offices are asked to do a variety of tasks ranging from day-to-day office work to constituent services. These tasks include answering the phones, writing letters and assisting with media clips. In addition to daily office tasks, interns may be conducting policy research relevant to the district, communicating with a multitude of constituency groups and helping with special casework projects on behalf of those in need. To apply for an internship in one of my district offices, please call (603) 641-9536. |
